A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
